Summary: To the Christian sensibility, it seems, modern art appears as something foreign to the religious realm. Theological reflection, however, has seen art as a way to approaching God and as an introduction into the mysteries of christian faith; in classical terms it is a locus theologicus. To the question whether art still fulfils this function, namely, that of a “mediation of the meaning of faith”, one can arrive at an answer only through a careful study and analysis of the works of painters and other contemporary artists who have dealt with the religious subject. Georges Rouault is a good example of figurative art that is engaged in christian proclamation and deep theological reflection.
