Summary: The author proposes to read some historical facts of St Franci’s experience – his journey to Egypt with the pilgrims of the Fifth Crusade and the encounter with the Sultan – as a basis of the crisis which brought the Saint of Assisi to review his relationship with non-Christians. This understanding is needed to read what S. Francis writes in the chapter XVI of his first Rule; the fundamental traits of the Franciscan missionary endeavour, humble and authentic Christian witness.
