1905 Dark Night and Depression* (2011/12 )

“Dark night” has entered into the spiritual vocabulary. People will talk of suffering a dark night when going through some interior crisis. However, what did these words mean in the Christian spiritual tradition and for St. John of the Cross? How do they relate to depression and what is the difference? The course will discuss these questions and will provide some assistance for discernment and Spiritual Direction. Methodology: Lectures, Group work with texts from the spiritual tradition. Examination: Term paper (8-12 pages).
