Digital age, AI, and consecrated life

March 21, 2026

Place: Via Ferruccio,19 ROMA
Date: 21/03/2026
PUA The “Stella Maris” Union of Chinese religious sisters and consecrated women in Rome has invited Professor Martín Carbajo-Núñez to lead two formative sessions with them, at Via Ferruccio,19 ROMA, addressing topics related to the "ethical use of social media and artificial intelligence (AI) in consecrated life".

The meetings are scheduled for March 21 and April 18, 2026, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m., with a 15-minute break, and will be followed by Holy Mass at 12:00 p.m. Prof. Carbajo will speak on two topics: 1) The digital age, artificial intelligence, and consecrated life 2) Training to be free in the digital world. He will develop these themes based on keywords proposed by the religious themselves, including:
  • Moral life: chastity, freedom, and responsibility in the use of social media; coherence between consecrated life offline and online presence; critical discernment of messages.
  • Community life: risks of isolation, transparency and privacy, individualism and fraternal relationships; digital relationships and the management of affectivity online; poverty and obedience.
  • Digital tools and mission: social media as an environment to be inhabited; reflection on how artificial intelligence influences mission; the human person created in the image of God and the saints; the use of generative tools for the preparation of preaching, lectio divina, and related practices.

The invitation to Professor Carbajo had already been extended in October 2025, but it was not possible to accept at that time due to his teaching commitments in San Diego, California. Consequently, Professor Michelle Sardella, OFM, was invited instead and offered a presentation on the theme: “The Vows and the Use of Social Media and Artificial Intelligence in Consecrated Life.”

The specific topics that Professor Carbajo will develop during the sessions assigned to him will be defined in the near future.
