Conference on Franciscan Economics

Ticino (Switzerland) – June 20, 2026

Place: Ticino, Svizzera
Date: 20/06/2026
PUA

Prof. Martín Carbajo-Núñez will be among the speakers at the conference to be held on Saturday, June 20, 2026, at the Centro di Ecologia Integrale – Laudato sì in S. Antonino (Ticino, Switzerland). The event is promoted by Caritas Ticino (Diocese of Lugano, Switzerland).

Prof. Carbajo will highlight the theological and social richness of Franciscan thought in the economic sphere and its remarkable relevance to contemporary challenges.

At the heart of the conference will be the great Franciscan economic tradition of the 13th–15th centuries, with particular attention to themes such as the non-pauperistic concept of poverty, work, the just price, the circulation of goods, the Monti di Pietà, and the Monti frumentari. The subtitle of the event is inspired by a well-known exhortation of Bernardino da Siena: “How many possessions do you keep today lying idle in your homes… It would be better for you to invest that money in your business rather than keep it idle as you do,” recalling the social responsibility of the economy and the need to put resources at the service of community building.

Among the speakers already announced are the economist Stefano Zamagni, Fr. Paolo Crivelli ffb, Prof. Valentina Rotondi, and Fr. Francesco Piloni ofm, confirming the high academic and cultural profile of the initiative.

The event aims to offer an important opportunity for dialogue between the Franciscan tradition, economic reflection, and social engagement in a region characterized by a strong and dynamic welfare system, yet marked by new forms of fragility and marginalization.
