Martín Carbajo-Núñez will participate as a key speaker at the international conference "
Saint Francis and the East: Missions, Interculturality, and Global Christianity in the Early Modern Age," to be held in Rome on November 23–24, 2026. Prof. Carbajo will speak on: "
Franciscan Missions in the East: Keys to Dialogue Between Cultures."
The conference is organized by the Istituto Storico Italiano per l'Età Moderna e Contemporanea, in collaboration with the University of International Studies of Rome (UNINT) and Roma Tre University, as part of the celebrations marking the 800th anniversary of the death of Saint Francis of Assisi (1226–2026).
The event aims to provide an interdisciplinary forum for exploring the contribution of Franciscanism and the missionary movement to the encounter between Christianity and Asian cultures during the Early Modern Age. It will bring together scholars from a wide range of disciplines—including religious history, mission history, art history, musicology, cultural history, and studies on the circulation of people, ideas, texts, and practices—to deepen understanding of the many forms of cultural and religious exchange between East and West.
The organizers, Carlo Pelliccia (University of International Studies of Rome) and Gaetano Sabatini (Roma Tre University and the Istituto Storico Italiano per l'Età Moderna e Contemporanea), have emphasized that Professor Carbajo-Núñez's participation will constitute "a valuable contribution to the academic development of the conference" and will significantly enrich the scholarly dialogue. The conference will bring together leading international experts to reflect on the missionary and intercultural legacy of the Franciscan tradition.
This invitation represents a further international recognition of Professor Carbajo-Núñez's scholarly work in the fields of Franciscan thought, interculturality, and the dialogue between Christianity and contemporary society.
