Sintesi

Summary
This article presents the philosophical foundation supporting the present understanding of "the right to personal freedom". It offers guidance on how the Christian anthropological vision can help combine the right to personal freedom and the right to public information. Starting from a negative anthropological concept of man as essentially self-centred, liberalism reduces the right to personal freedom to a negative freedom which, whilst avoiding abuses, does not encourage altruistic self-giving. In this restrictive vision the right to personal freedom and the right to information are always in opposition. However, in the Christian anthropological perspective "freedom" and "communication" appear as two concepts dynamically related and interdependent. Without denying the necessary safeguards against possible abuse the stress always falls on the prospect that this right offers to man to be himself and to give himself in freedom.
